If you or a loved one lives with dry macular degeneration, you know how challenging it is to watch your central vision slowly fade. At Retina Consultants of Muncie, we're proud to bring the latest advancements in eye care directly to our community in Muncie, Indiana.
Led by our fellowship-trained retina specialist, Jeffrey Rapkin, MD, we focus on protecting your sight using safe, cutting-edge treatments. Today, a groundbreaking therapy called photobiomodulation (PBM) is offering new hope by using gentle light waves to support and revitalize your retinal cells.
Photobiomodulation is a noninvasive light therapy that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate and repair damaged cells in the retina. This innovative treatment targets the mitochondria—the powerhouses of your cells—to boost energy production and reduce oxidative stress.
In late 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA, 2024) granted marketing authorization for the first multiwavelength PBM device designed specifically for early to intermediate dry macular degeneration. By improving cellular health, this therapy helps slow down the progression of the disease and preserves your functional vision.
Light therapy supports your retinal health by delivering precise wavelengths of light that rescue energy-starved cells and improve your overall visual acuity. During a session, the light gently penetrates the retina to stimulate a key enzyme that increases cellular energy and clears out metabolic waste.
Clinical data published in the journal Retina (2026) shows that patients with intermediate dry macular degeneration who received PBM treatment over 24 months achieved a significant visual improvement. Treated eyes gained an average of about six letters on an eye chart compared to just one letter in the untreated group. Additionally, the study found that PBM reduced the risk of progressing to geographic atrophy—a severe, advanced stage of dry macular degeneration—from 24% down to just 6.8%.
No, photobiomodulation is not a universal cure and is most effective during the early and intermediate stages of dry macular degeneration. Because PBM relies on stimulating living, viable cells, it cannot restore vision once severe tissue loss or geographic atrophy has already occurred.
It's also important to note that PBM doesn’t replace traditional standards of care, such as daily AREDS2 nutritional supplements. We recommend a comprehensive eye exam to determine if your retina is healthy enough to benefit from this advanced light therapy.
Protecting your vision requires a proactive, personalized approach. If you want to learn more about how we use photobiomodulation to support your eye health, we're here to help. Please schedule a consultation with Dr. Rapkin and our dedicated team at Retina Consultants of Muncie today.
